5 Health Benefits of Walking

Walking is good for your health, period.

“Walking affects multiple systems in the body, so it offers many great benefits,” says Dr. James N. Robinson, a sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

Despite its low impact, walking is considered moderately intense aerobic activity—if you do it at a pace you can still talk but singing would be difficult—meaning it works your cardiovascular system.

When walking, Dr. Robinson suggests that people walk at a speed that slightly raises their heart rate. You should be slightly out of breath, but not completely out of breath; use the “speaking test” described above. “It’s a good monitor that the walking you’re doing is going to improve your cardiovascular health,” he says.
