MEROM, Ind. , May 11, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – An ultra-modern and sustainable crypto-mining facility will soon convert part of the site into a 50-year-old power plant in southwest Indiana. The high-tech facility, built and funded by Kentucky-based crypto pioneers AboutBit, LLC, will specialize in the validation of multiple electronic assets and will provide multiple next-generation functionality to Sullivan County and the surrounding area. An online cryptocurrency mining facility next to Merom Generating Station will start within the next 30 days.
The development is expected to create up to 15 new high-tech jobs, with the potential to hire more once the data center becomes online. Tom Novasky, CEO of WIN Energy, says the project will benefit the local economy and co-op member owners.
“We believe there is huge potential for rural areas and advanced technology infrastructure such as data storage, cryptocurrency and cybersecurity facilities,” Nowaskie said. “This is an example of that potential, and we look forward to exploring similar opportunities in the future. We also appreciate the continued positive collaboration and engagement with Sullivan County and community leaders.”
Unlike other crypto mining projects, environmental pollution and noise will be mitigated by advanced technology and the location of the facility itself.
An advanced liquid cooling system will ensure that the machines run quietly, unlike the noisy fan-cooled rigs that are often associated with crypto mining facilities. Additionally, constructing the data center on the site of a long-lived power plant means that construction will have little or no impact on the surrounding environment.
Through a five-year agreement, AboutBit will purchase 115 megawatts of electricity from WIN Energy to operate the facility. In order to accommodate such a high load, the facility’s power supply can be completely cut off, allowing AboutBit to respond to power requirements at times of peak demand.
Power plants are hard to rotate and disable,” said Stacy Griggs, founder and CEO of Abbott Pet. “If demand in the region peaks, we will actually be able to reduce our energy requirements from WIN Energy and reduce our use at the mining facility, ultimately benefiting other customers in southwest Indiana.”

More than 75 years ago, a group of determined rural residents united in their cause to bring electricity to their homes and farms. Local farmers and rural residents came together to form what is known today as the Western Indiana Rural Electricity Membership Corporation (WIN Energy REMC). WIN Energy REMC was incorporated on October 1, 1997, with the merger of Knox and Sullivan County REMCs. The legacy of WIN Energy REMC dates back to 1939 when the Knox and Sullivan County REMCs were incorporated.
