Dyson won 3rd in a row at Lime Rock Park

Chris Dyson had another successful weekend in the Trans Am series presented by Pirelli, winning the Lime Rock Park Memorial Day Classic in the TA category for the third year in a row. Dyson took home his fifth Motul Pole of the season and topped from the green flag to checkers in his original track, his fourth straight win and fifth race win of the season. With teammate Matthew Brabham finishing behind, Dyson CD Racing took a 1-2, while Dyson’s father, Rob Dyson, presided over the race as Grand Marshal.

Starting from pole position, Dyson, who had won the last two Trans-Am visits to Lime Rock in 2019 and 2021, jumped in his #20 ALTWELL Ford Mustang when the green flag was waved, which is where he stayed for the entirety of the carefree race. After the start, Dyson closely followed McNichols’ No. 23, Amy Roman’s Chevrolet Corvette, which fought hard against Brabham’s No. 21 Mustang. Brabham passed Roman after eight laps, and held second place for the remainder of the race. Romain struggled hard to keep third against Ken Thwaits’ No. 7 Franklin Road Apparel Camaro, but Thwaits pulled off a pass on lap 22, claiming the last step of the podium with third and leaving Romain to finish fourth.

“This place means so much to me, it’s overwhelming,” Dyson said as he got out of his car. “This place meant the world to me growing up, getting out here with my family and watching my dad race. It really sowed the seed of my love for the sport. Now, to come back here and achieve success, a career of 20 years, I am very fortunate. I have a sense of perspective that I didn’t have. Obviously when I was a kid, but I have the same feeling of love for this place. Winning on Memorial Day never gets old. Since it’s Memorial Day, we have to realize why we celebrate today and honor those who gave their lives so that we can come out here and enjoy our freedoms.”

Randy Hill in the #31 Hill Propeller was the XGT class winner, placing fifth in the overall standings.

“It was hot, but there was a lot of fun,” Hill said on the podium. “This is my home track, and it is the most beautiful track in the world. It is the place where you used to be able to come and sit on the grass and have lunch with Paul Newman. It was amazing driving the Hale Propeller today, and I am so grateful to have my family here with me.”

There was a lot of excitement in the GT and SGT classes, with the winners being decided on the closing laps. Billy Griffin in the #14 Griffin Auto Care/Sheehan Twining Ford Mustang and Michael Saya in the #13 Performance Management/Rapid Wraps/Motul Porsche GT3 Cup 99 battle in the GT class, swapping positions for the entire race. In the end, it was Griffin who finished first, also taking home the ChillOut Keep Cool Move of the Race.

“This is my first time here, and it’s a beautiful place,” Griffin said. “The car was well connected. I would like to thank my crew, my wife and my family. The car was great, the competition was great, and I had a lot of fun racing against everyone. It took a long time to get around them, but I was patient, put my head down, and made it work” .

At SGT, Danny Lowery in the #42 Bridgehole Porsche GT3 Cup and Jason Berkeley in the #67 Corvette Falls Village in Corvette, raced in an exciting race, with Berkeley gaining an advantage at the start of the event. Unfortunately, Berkeley’s mechanical problems paved the way for Lowry to take the lead and win the class.

“It was a blast,” Lowry said. “This was my first time here at Lime Rock, and I was about to get lost like a duck in the desert for a while. I was about 20 seconds late and then had to pedal hard to catch up once I figured out how to drive the track. I really enjoyed Lime Rock. Nice track, nice area, and I love these fans. I was really happy to get out and drive for them.”

Today’s race, presented by the Franklin Road Apparel, will be broadcast on CBS Sports on Thursday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET, with a presentation on Saturday, June 4 at 12:00 a.m. ET.

TA returns to the track June 23-26 with the Mid-Ohio SpeedTour at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Track.
