Travelers hoping to enjoy a half-term vacation are still affected by canceled and overbooked flights.
Passengers stranded at Gatwick Airport have expressed their outrage after easyJet canceled more than 200 flights from the airport at short notice during one of the busiest travel times of the year. TUI has also canceled a number of flights, and Spanish low-cost airline Vueling has been inundated with complaints from passengers causing an overbooking of flights.
The airport and airlines appeared to blame each other for the cancellation.
Mark McKinnon, a London correspondent for Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper, was among dozens of passengers who complained to Vueling after they were denied boarding. He said: “We’ve been kicked out of VY7833, and we’re now sitting in Gatwick, waiting for someone to tell us how we’re going to get to Barcelona today.”
He told the Guardian: “People are clashing everywhere. I’ve been covering Ukraine – so that’s not a struggle – but the chaos at Gatwick is staggering, and selling an extra 27 seats on a midterm break flight to Barcelona sounds like a scam,” he told The Guardian.
Amanda Ferguson, the stranded passenger, said the sightings at the airport on Monday morning were “crazy” after the flight she and her boyfriend had booked to Belfast on Sunday was cancelled. The couple, who traveled to London for ABBA’s party on Friday, had to return home via Glasgow.
Ferguson, a Belfast-based TV presenter, said: “We were due to be at the airport yesterday for the 7 o’clock flight. When we tried to scan our boarding passes, we were told the flight had been cancelled.”
Speaking to The Guardian, she said: “The girl at the check-in counter was obviously very confused because people had been grieving for her all day. Another exhausted employee was handing out a two-page document on what to do next.”
Ferguson and her partner were initially offered a hotel room in Southend, 90 minutes away. She said they only got a room near the airport when they got to the airline by phone after an hour’s wait.
Speaking from Glasgow Airport after a 5am flight on Monday morning, Ferguson described the experience as a “test”. She added, “Some people were really losing it at the airport, and you can see the faces of the poor staff. It wasn’t their fault. My patience is running out a bit. I just want to go home and go to bed.”
At least 32 Gatwick flights were canceled on Monday, including two with just an hour’s notice.
Chris Turner, drummer with heavy metal group Orange Goblin, is stranded in Germany after two EasyJet flights to Gatwick were cancelled.
He traveled to Hamburg after his flight from Berlin was cancelled, but when he arrived in Hamburg, that flight was also halted. He tweeted to the airline: ‘My flight home from Berlin to Gatwick was canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice. Rescheduled to a flight from Hamburg today so I got a two hour train ride here to be told this flight was also canceled with less notice than 6 hours. I’m stuck here. What are you going to do?”
On Monday, he added, “Today’s flight seems not likely either, I wonder if they’ll do anything this time or just leave us up?”
Alan Black, of Havant, Hampshire, was stranded at Gatwick Airport Monday morning after his easyJet flight was canceled from a family wedding in Seville. He tweeted that EasyJet employees were too Blame the shortage of baggage staff at Gatwick for cancellationHe said that the company treated the passengers “Too bad”.
Camille, a student from Caen in northern France, is applying for compensation after her easyJet flight was canceled on Sunday night. She said on Twitter that no reason was given for the cancellation and that the airline was Blame Gatwick in this case.
He told her Gatwick Airport “The airlines make the decision about canceling flights, not the airport. You will need to go back to your airline.”

A spokesperson for the airline said: “We have taken the decision to pre-cancel approximately 24 Gatwick flights per day between May 28 and June 6. We are very sorry for the late notice of some of the cancellations and the inconvenience they have caused to customers who have booked on these flights. However, We believe this is necessary to provide reliable services during this busy period.
Separately, last night [Sunday] At Gatwick, like other airlines operating at Gatwick, our flight program has been affected by restrictions on air traffic control at the airport. The pre-cancellation at Gatwick today which was made last week has nothing to do with this.
Marc Plowright, a stranded TUI ticket holder, tweeted that he felt “let down” By a travel company after being stuck in Gatwick all day on Sunday. Tui apologized for the outage, which it blamed on “various operational reasons and a very busy weekend of planned flights”.
“We would like to apologize to some of our customers who have experienced flight delays in recent days,” Toei said in a statement.
“While flight delays and flight cancellations with us are rare, a sudden increase in the number of vacationers as well as several operational and supply chain issues means that a small number of our flights are affected.
“We saw some security queues this morning, but they quickly dissipated,” a Gatwick spokesperson said. Referred questions regarding cancellation to easyJet.
