Many travel restrictions are being eased. Here is the latest release for March 2022

We are approaching the start of the spring travel season as the weather begins to warm north of the equator. In addition, many positive developments in the field of domestic and international travel make it easy for you to pack your bags and hop on board. Here’s some travel news to know for March 2022, including several restrictions that have been eased.

US travel restrictions

Here are some of the relaxed travel restrictions in the United States.

Hawaii

Hawaii remains the only state to undergo a mandatory quarantine, but that is changing soon. Domestic tourists will no longer need to show proof of vaccination or upload a negative test before accessing the Safe Travels program if they arrive on or after March 26, 2022. Mandatory 5-day quarantine also sunsets with Safe Travels for US visitors.

Local proof of vaccination authorizations for Maui and Oahu expires March 5, 2022.

However, international visitors are still required to receive full vaccinations and obtain a negative test prior to arrival in order to waive the mandatory quarantine.

Despite the abandonment of the vaccine and testing requirements, the indoor mask mandate remains in effect at the state level.

New York City

The vaccine expires for some indoor businesses, such as restaurants and entertainment, on March 7, 2022. This authorization first took effect in August 2021.

Other major cities with similar policies are taking similar steps as new coronavirus cases decline.

Spring break for college

If you’re looking to head to a US beach during the off-season, you should consider checking out your college spring break schedule first.

March can be a perfect opportunity for an adult beach trip to escape the cold snap of late winter and enjoy low overnight stays. However, you can avoid popular spring breaks like Myrtle Beach, SC, Panama City, FL and South Padre Island, TX to avoid the party crowds.

Instructions for entering the United States

Travel requirements to the United States remain unchanged. Returning US citizens of at least two years of age must undergo a negative pre-arrival test within 24 hours before returning to the country. This test window applies to fully vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers.

Citizens from outside the United States must have been fully vaccinated and have a negative pre-arrival test result up to 24 hours before traveling to the United States.

Canada

Fully vaccinated travelers have the option of taking an antigen or molecular test prior to arrival for unrestricted entry. Test window 72 hours. It is possible to enter Canada from the United States by air or land.

Mexico

Mexico remains one of the most permissive international travel destinations. The state does not have any vaccine or pre-arrival testing requirements.

The Caribbean and Latin America

Travel restrictions vary by Caribbean island or Latin American destination. Some states have lenient requirements, but others require age-eligible travelers to be fully vaccinated.

Here are the current guidelines for the most frequented vacation spots.

Bahamas

Passengers of at least 2 years of age must have a negative test prior to arrival. All visitors must also have Covid-19 travel insurance.

dominican republic

Entry requirements in the Dominican Republic remain the most flexible in the Caribbean. There are no mandatory requirements for testing, vaccination, or quarantine. However, a random test may be conducted at the airport.

Jamaica

Jamaica no longer requires a travel authorization form. However, a pre-arrival test is still required within 72 hours of arrival.

Costa Rica

The entry requirements for Costa Rica remain in effect until March 31, 2022:

  • Unprotected visitors: valid health insurance and health card
  • Vaccinated visitors: proof of vaccination and health card

Pre-arrival testing is optional for any vaccination status.

Costa Rica’s health passport and health insurance requirements are no longer necessary if you enter the country on or after April 1, 2022.

Belize

Visitors who are at least five years old must have a valid test prior to arrival and stay in a government approved accommodation facility to enter Belize.

Colombia

Travelers at least 18 years old must have been fully vaccinated. Partially vaccinated tourists can visit with a negative test before arrival. Non-restaurant travelers cannot visit Colombia at this time.

Europe

Opening up more parts of Europe may also be easier as the EU’s non-essential travel ban expires on March 1, 2022. This expiration could help simplify country-specific entry guidelines.

Below are the current entry requirements for some of the most in-demand European destinations.

Italia

Until at least June 15, 2022, international visitors who are at least 50 years old must be fully vaccinated. Travelers with evidence of a recent recovery within the past six months may also be eligible to enjoy Italy.

All other travelers under the age of 50 can enter without restriction by meeting one of the following conditions:

  • Proof of complete vaccination provided that the final dose does not exceed 270 days
  • Recent recovery in the past six months
  • Negative pre-arrival test from the last 48 hours

These guidelines are currently in effect until March 31, 2022, but can be extended.

Iceland

Iceland was one of the first European countries to reopen its borders. Now, it is one of the first in Europe to not require proof of vaccination or a negative test before arrival.

The end of pandemic-related travel restrictions came into effect on February 25, 2022. This policy change reflects the growing momentum from travel groups to ease international travel testing requirements.

Most continental European countries still require full vaccination for entry with restrictions.

United kingdom

Fully vaccinated travelers will no longer need to have pre-arrival or post-arrival testing. However, note that there can be additional regional entry requirements for each member state of the UK. It is good to check if you are going to Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland as well as England.

Non-vaccinated visitors must take a negative pre-arrival test no later than two days before the departure flight. These travelers must also book and pay a post-arrival test fee within the first two days of their stay in the UK.

Vaccination status does not require mandatory quarantine.

Israel

Israel is open to tourism again for fully vaccinated, recently recovered and unvaccinated tourists. In short, most visitors must submit a negative test before arrival and self-isolate on the first day. This reopening is significant because the Holy Land is a popular destination for religious pilgrimage.

Australia

Australian Tourism is open to fully vaccinated travelers with negative pre-arrival testing. You can take the test up to three days before your departure date. This is one of the few countries in Oceania and Asia to open its doors again.

New Zealand

New Zealand remains closed to non-essential travel but is gradually opening its doors. Fully vaccinated travelers from Australia can visit now.

Plans to reopen call for international tourists to be able to visit in July 2022. However, skilled workers, students and visa holders may be able to enter sooner.

Summary

The travel restrictions for March 2022 are the most flexible since the resumption of international travel. It is possible to visit many leisure and cultural destinations for the first time in two years. Hopefully the trend will continue, and there will be fewer restrictions in April.
