Austin, Texas – Millions of Americans are expected to travel by land and air this Memorial Day weekend. AAA estimates that 39 million people will travel for the holiday.
Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) expects to be the busiest Memorial Day travel time in the airport’s history. Memorial Day weekend traditionally marks the start of summer travel, but daily passenger numbers in Australia are already on the rise.
Last summer, peak travel days in Australia were Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and Mondays, mainly before 8am, but with summer 2022 approaching, travelers can expect to get busy every day of the week.
AUS has some tips for travelers for this weekend and the upcoming summer travel season:
When will you arrive at AUS
To help manage summer travel across Australia, passengers using Public Security must arrive at least two and a half hours before boarding domestic flights and three hours before boarding international flights, regardless of the day of the week or the time of day of their flight.
Passengers must set aside extra time if they need to check baggage, return a rental car, or complete other activities before joining the security lines. First-time travelers, travelers who haven’t flown in years, large groups, and those traveling with young children should be given extra time.
Preparing for the TSA Examination and Packing Properly
Security checkpoints open at 3 am. All four checkpoints lead to all gates and airlines at Barbara Jordan Terminal.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security delays can occur when passengers accidentally pack restricted items in their carry-on baggage. To help avoid delays, passengers should review what they can and cannot bring with them through security at TSA.gov.
Parking and/or disembarkation of passengers
An increase in passengers means more vehicles in Australia. Drivers dropping off passengers can use the upper level for departures or the lower level for arrivals to ease congestion. Passengers lowered to the lower deck can quickly go upstairs for ticketing and security using escalators and elevators. If the lower floor is crowded, arriving passengers can use the escalators and elevators to pick them up upstairs.
Passengers looking to park their cars on site can visit ABIAparking.com to reserve a parking space and check real-time parking availability before arriving at the airport.
Uber, Lyft, Wingz, or other ride companies use the tram service available on the first floor of the red garage to take passengers to the meeting area located on the ground floor below the rental car facility.
Check in on your trip
Passengers without checked baggage can bypass ticket counters and head straight to TSA checkpoints with these time-saving check-in options:
- Use the lower berth and upper side to drop off – from the lower level, passengers can quickly go upstairs for ticketing and security via escalators and elevators.
- Self-service check-in kiosks, which allow passengers to print boarding passes and baggage cards inside the terminal building, are located across from the airline ticket counters.
- In addition to traditional check-in procedures, some airlines offer external check-in on the upper floor.
- Travelers can also save time by checking in for their flight using the airline’s mobile app and boarding pass.
Get the most out of your AUS
Once inside the terminal, travelers can explore new art installations, franchise shows, live music stages and more using step-by-step directions on the AUS digital map to locate the route at AirportMaps.AustinTexas.gov.
While airport restaurant opening hours may vary at the franchisee’s outstanding staffing levels, AUS has invested in new 24/7 self-service kiosks for passengers to purchase snacks, beverages and travel essentials, including daily made and delivered Sprinkles Cupcakes.
Information for Loyalty Travelers and Borders
Passengers traveling with Allegiant and Frontier will depart from the South Terminal. All other airlines operate from the main Barbara Jordan terminal. Terminals are not connected and must be accessed separately. The South Station is located near US 183 and Burleson Road, at 10,000 Logistics Lane, Austin. Passengers can use the shuttle bus, which departs from the departure level on the pier, to travel from Barbara Jordan Station to the South Terminal.
