Rock Hill eliminates the Frisco Heritage; Southern Great Prairie, Melissa wins

PROSPER – Prosper Rock Hill made the most of his attack in a one-way game in a Class 5A District Two quarterfinal on Thursday against state-seeded Frisco Heritage, capturing all three successes in the crucial sixth inning in two stages to lead him 4-2. Triumph at Prosper High School.

Rock Hill (29-8), seeded No. 2 in the Dallas Morning News poll for Class 5A/others, combined strong defense and strong pitching for starters Grace Berlage and Taylor Hagen to take the win. Rock Hill will now face the Hallsville/Forney Series winner in next week’s 5A Region II semifinals.

“I knew this was going to be a tough, tough game and the fifth or sixth game would go down,” Prosper Rock Hill coach Lee Ann Budd said. “Both bowlers did really well and we took advantage of our chances on the scoreboard.”

The match was tied 2-2 in the sixth inning, when Rock Hill’s Julie Malan doubled the team’s first hit. Ella Berlage followed up with an RBI double to lead 3-2, with Camila Spriggs adding an RBI ground ball to take another lead.

However, Frisco Heritage (27-2), ranked No. 2 in the state and #1 in The News’ Class 5A/Other Poll, had a final rally in seventh, as doubled by Sarah Hagen and single by Kylie Swayze put runners on the corners with one exit. Then Rock Hill’s Katrina Luna had a great opportunity to dive for a second time, with Hagen taking the knockout blow to close out the competition.

Hagen threw four rounds at rest to take the win, scattering three hits and hitting five.

Rock Hill also had an early advantage, scoring a run at the top of the first in a throwing foul that led to Veronica Cully’s foul. Heritage responded at the bottom of the first clinch to lead 2-1, using a throwback foul and a double RBI by Elyse Leclair to score runs.

The Heritage lead remained in place until the third inning, when Rock Hill used a walk and a two-base error to put the runners second and third with no ends. Malan hit the RBI’s sacrifice fly to score Kale, holding the match with a score of 2-2.

Heritage player Jensen Hall, a Dartmouth signature, lost by three hitters for the full game by seven strokes.

South Grand Prairie 6, Allen 5: Adriana Mountcastle hit a two-stroke single at the bottom of the seventh inning to win the thrill of Game 1 of the Class 6A Region 1 quarterfinal series in South Lake Carroll. Mountcastle and Jasmyn Lloyd had three RBIs each for the South Grand Prairie (30-2), the No. 7 ranked team in News’ Class 6A district poll.

Sophia Simmons added two hits for the SGP while Cassidy Fixico scored eight hits in a full match win. Allen (23-12-2) took a 5-4 lead in seventh place when Morgan Wright scored a pass. Taylor Wright got two hits for Allen while Michaela Booth got two. Game 2 on Friday in South Lake Carroll.

Tal Al-Zohour Marcos 3 Hebron 0: Faith Dressel scored two goals to lead Marcus over Hebron in Game 1 of the Frisco Lone Star’s Category 6A Region 1 quarterfinal series. Dressel had nine hits and didn’t walk.

Tori Edwards earned a Homer double and solo in the fifth inning for Marcus (25-10-1), ranked No. 9 in the Class 6A news district’s poll. Lucy Crowder allowed the winning run, five hits and three walks in the Hebron loss while teammate Ashley Vaccaro got a double. Game 2 of the Lewisville ISD Challenger Series will take place on Friday at the Lone Star.

Mansfield Lake Ridge 5, Harker Heights 2: Kassidy Chance had an RBI single as part of the first three-stroke as Lake Ridge completed a two-game sweep of Harker Heights in a Class 6A Region Two quarterfinal series at Lake Ridge. Avery Celeste Hoang scored a total win, netting five goals while allowing earned runs, five hits and one walk.

Chance and Paris Johnson scored two goals each with Lake Ridge (26-6), which qualified to face either the Houston Cypress Ranch or Bridgeland in the area semifinals. Rosalyn Simmons had two hits while Evan Fuller scored at home with Harker Heights (32-8-1).

Waco Midway 11, Willie 1: Tristian Thompson had a pair of singles visitors to book the third of nine as Midway defeated Wylie in Game 1 of the Class 6A Region Two quarterfinal series in Midlothian. Charlie Yurman Homer had a three-stroke while Shelby Smith added a three-pointer in the frame for Midway (28-6). Lani Brown and Brylan Tweety combined for a single hit while Kelsey Mathis and Dania achieved a three-hit turn each at Midway.

Jordyn Merrett had Wylie’s only double in the RBI in the first. Match 2 is on Friday in Midlothian.

Aledo 4, Colleyville Heritage 1: Presley Hull had a double in the first half and Kylie Smith took a complete win as Aledo was too much for Colville Heritage in Game 1 of the Class 5A Zone 1 quarterfinal series in Aledo. Smith had five hits while hitting five hits and three walks to Alido (28-2).

DeNae Vasquez Dickson has three hits, including a double and triple for the Colleyville Heritage (28-4), ranked No. 3 in The News’ Class 5A/Others poll. McKinley Swaim lost bad luck, not allowing any earned rounds, four hits and three walks. Colleyville Heritage made three mistakes.

Match 2 is on Friday in Colleyville.

Colonial 5, Frisco Memorial 0: Tamya Waiters threw a three-stroke close, hitting 13 while allowing three walks as The Colony rolled in Game 1 of the Class 5A District Two quarterfinal series at The Colony.

Sydney Young Homer hit by three runs as part of the colony’s first four rounds (22-8-1), ranked no. 6 in News Category 5A/Other District Poll. No. 9 Memorial dropped to 26-8). Game two is Friday at Memorial.

Melissa 7, Kennedal 1: Alex Starr took 12 hits in a complete game win to lead Melissa past Kennedle in the Class 4A District Two quarterfinal match in the quarterfinal match at Carrollton Ranchoview. Starr hit four hits and walked twice.

Rachel Wells went 3-for-4 with two runs on the plate while Autumn Bell scored two hits and three RBIs, including two wins, twice in the third inning to give Melissa a 4-0 lead. Kindred Johnson also had two hits, including one RBI song as part of Melissa’s two-round first inning.

Keegan Crabtree added a sixth-round penalty for Melissa (26-4), who will face Mabank or Texarkana Pleasant Grove in the district semifinals next week. Kylie Evans got a double for Kendall (27-6).

Aubrey 4, Selena 1: Brynlie Dunkin earned an RBI solo as part of a three-stroke first inning as Argyle completed a two-game sweep of a Class 4A Zone Two quarterfinal series in Selina. Dunkin also took a total win in the game, striking off six while not allowing any gain stilts, three hits and four walks.

Kelly Fuller and Brie Jones had two successes apiece for Aubrey (24-7), who advanced to face Pollard or Canton in the regional semi-finals.
