The carrier will upgrade its wifi, add more USB charging devices, increase carrying space, and provide more choices for passengers

US airline Southwest announced several new changes and service improvements Wednesday in a press release. The carrier will develop a 5-year plan to improve the customer experience and will invest more than $2 billion to reach all goals.

Texas-based Southwest Airlines recently won the 2022 JD Power Award for “Highest Customer Satisfaction” in North America among budget airlines, but its commitment to better service is relentless, according to its latest statement.

The company has published its changes and key goals to modernize the customer experience and has promised to boost in-flight wifi, install better technology for power outlets, make more space for portable items, include more entertainment options, enable new self-service features, and will launch a new fare class, Wanna Get Away Plus .

“You can never stop working to get better,” said Bob Jordan, CEO, “and as our beloved founder Herb said, ‘If you rest on your laurels, you’ll get a thorn in your ass! “We have a long and proud history of providing legendary customer service and hospitality, and we have bold plans and significant investments to modernize and enhance the Southwest experience.”

The CEO also added: “As we continue to welcome loyal customers and gain new ones, these initiatives, along with the best people in the industry, support our goal of connecting people to what is most important in their lives through friendliness, reliability, and low-cost air travel.”

The low-cost carrier has expanded its network over the past few weeks, introducing routes in the US and abroad, and will now also focus on new service improvements.

More about the new changes

Southwest Airlines has stated that it wants to provide its customers with better service and that they also listen to complaints and suggestions. “We listen to our customers, and their insights help us meet and exceed their expectations,” Jordan said. These are the major new changes and updates:

Better Wifi

The low-cost carrier understands that connectivity is becoming more important to its customers, and will upgrade its wifi equipment on its existing fleet with the Anuvu provider and implement devices with 10x better bandwidth and speed.

The service is already being tested on some routes, and the carrier has also announced a collaboration with Viasat, a leading provider of satellite connectivity, for high-quality internet and live TV.

Useful USB chargers

The carrier will install USB-A and USB-C power ports on every seat, without compromising legroom. “The ability to keep your devices charged while you’re on board is a request we’ve heard consistently in ongoing conversations with our customers,” said Tony Roach, Southwest Vice President of Customer Experience and Customer Relations.

This new price will become available later this month and will offer more flexibility: the ability to transfer travel funds and make same-day seat changes on a flight available between the same point of departure and destination.

The southwest space is modified to provide more room for carry-on bags and give passengers the option to bring two free hand bags — size and weight restrictions apply. Next year, travelers will find larger overhead bins for their personal belongings.

Extra refreshments

Along with a large selection of drinks, the airline will include additional seasonal options such as a blood mary mix during the summer, and will also include other alcohol options such as solid seltzer and rose in September.

Baby Lab Features

Another feature will allow customers to add child travelers when booking online. Currently, the airline has also changed the self-service kiosks to allow passengers with bosom children to check in.
