In the spring of 2022, we visited the award-winning Austin location of the Fairmont brand, a high-rise hotel that defies its size with surprising warmth.
WWith The Proper, Hotel Van Zandt, and Commodore Perry Estate, Austin doesn’t want luxury and upscale hospitality. However, in the spring of 2018, the city’s vibrant downtown district welcomed its largest hotel yet – the Fairmont Austin.
The gleaming 37-story tower features 1,048 rooms, five restaurants and bars, a great spa, and a main party pool (the largest in downtown Austin). But despite its grandeur and direct access to the convention center, Fairmont Austin maintains surprising warmth. This may be why Fairmont Austin, in addition to being the chain’s largest American site when it debuted, is also one of the most beloved – it currently sits at number one in the Condé Nast TravelerThe 20 Best Texas Hotels: Readers’ Choice.
In every room, expect luxurious bathrobes, a Nespresso machine, and luxury Le Labo products, including Fairmont’s signature Rose 31 fragrance.
We were fortunate to register one of the 131 rooms that were upgraded under the Fairmont Gold canopy. She described this experience as “a hotel within a hotel”. The Gold Room Key gives you access to a dedicated concierge team, private check-in and check-out, and most importantly, the Gold Lounge, which serves an extensive breakfast, evening hors d’oeuvres, and great views of downtown Austin.
Who stays here?
everyone. We saw couples of all ages, although that weekend was particularly young – the high school girls’ volleyball tournament was taking place in the area. Close to the convention center, the hotel is an obvious stopover for convention coordinators, but speaking with local friends, it’s clear that Fairmont Austin also provides excellent accommodation.
A large number of families also showed up this weekend. Our group included a 5-year-old, who found lots of new friends to play with in the pool.
Fairmont Austin Spa
My visit to the Fairmont Spa – a gorgeous space that could fit in with some of the best in Dallas – was a bit last minute, so a massage or facial was off the table. Fortunately for me, something comforting was waiting for me: a date with nee Salita.
I say this in all seriousness – Salita gave me the greatest manicure and pedicure of my entire life. (And I consider myself relatively seasoned in the manicure and pedicure department!) Honestly, I’d consider taking a three-hour drive from Dallas just to spend some time in her magical hands. If you don’t take my words seriously, just look at the many, Many 5-star reviews from TripAdvisor for the Fairmont Austin Spa Resort, many of which call out Saletta.
Dining at Fairmont Austin
In addition to the sublimated Salita pedicure, there was another highlight protector. It was strange not to venture out into a city full of amazing independent restaurants, but it turns out there is a hidden gem of eating under our noses.
However, before I get to Garrison, I have to set out a unique and extensive dining scene at Fairmont Austin. outside the hall, FultonHome to bar-elevated snacks and a staple of sparkling oak, it’s the first of five bars and restaurants you’ll discover in the hotel. Then, you will find RevoLas Vegas-style food court (includes offerings of Japanese, American, Italian, Thai and more) and good Things, which doubles as a hotel gift shop and cozy café. Climb to the seventh floor to find rules and records, It offers vibrant views of Rainey Street and is adjacent to Fairmont Austin’s bustling full-service pool.
Venture through all of the l0bby-level destinations listed above to reach Garrison, tucked behind the facade of a classic home to the south (beautiful front porch, Greek columns, all). We confidently tried every innovative dish the waitress suggested: Truffle Tatter, Tuna Crudo with Yuzu Kocho, Parker Rolls with Fermented Honey, and Green Circle Chicken with Black Truffle. We’d order every last bite again – paired with the award winning restaurant’s wine program.
Pro tip: Sit at the bar if you can watch Executive Chef Jakub Czyszczon and his talented team making dining dreams a reality.
Don’t dismiss Fairmont Austin as just another link in a chain of hotels. Sure, there are moments of hospitality homogeneity, but there are also plenty of thoughtful touches and luxurious amenities to distinguish this downtown destination.
