Heading across the pond this summer? We know many of you won’t be dropping your foodie tour of Italy or your much-anticipated Greece island trip, but take a moment and think about these underrated destinations for summer vacation in Europe this year.

From the enchanting Baroque towns of Southern Bohemia to epic long journeys for days (followed by a dinner of garlic soup and dumplings), here Six lesser-known destinations in Europe to consider on your next adventure.

Tallinn, Estonia

Learn about Northeastern Europe with a summer trip to the cozy Estonia capital Tallinn. Lying along the Baltic Sea, Tallinn is filled with cultural attractions and beautiful historical architecture (the oldest building in Tallinn dates back to 1246!) in a picturesque walkable Old Town. Tourists can see it all with the Tallinn Card, giving users access to more than 40 attractions across this underrated European city for 24, 48 or 72 hours.

Visiting Estonia in the summer months will allow you to experience the unforgettable “White Nights”, the longest day of the calendar year around the summer solstice.

The sun barely sets during these days, and there are plenty of nighttime activities from sunrise hikes to early morning brunch to make the most of this wonderful time of year in the Nordic region.

Tatra Mountains, Slovakia

With a cultural capital packed with plenty of things to do (and some great river views to boot), not to mention historic towns, friendly locals, and great food, there are plenty of reasons to love Slovakia. Since Slovakia borders popular tourist destinations in Central Europe such as the Czech Republic and Poland, it is often overlooked, but visitors here are pleasantly surprised by simply immersing themselves in this unique destination.

A highlight of Slovakia is all the breathtaking hiking opportunities in the Tatras. Many travelers hike some of this mountain range in neighboring Poland, but the best parts of the High Tatras can be found in Slovakia. And while the winter months offer some great scenery and challenges for hikers, the summer months are truly the perfect time to explore here.

The tracks here can vary from easy to expert, so you can choose an adventure that suits you. Start your trip in Zdiar (a short drive from the Polish border) where you can relax and rejuvenate in one of the town’s cozy chalets or hostels and plan your itinerary. Plenty of trails provide rest stops along the way where hikers can refuel with a pint of fresh pilsner, a plate of hot dumplings, or Slovakia’s famous garlic soup (garlic).

České Budějovice, Czech Republic

Known as the capital of “South Bohemia,” České Budějovice is the perfect place for a quick summer break when visiting Prague or Vienna. The nearby town of Cesky Krumlov is popular with tourists during the summer months, so choose České Budějovice and you’ll be welcome with fewer crowds and hidden gems to explore.

Start your day here at the town square, which is in fact one of the largest town squares in all of Europe. Wander the historic streets, explore centuries-old landmarks such as the Samson Fountain and the Iron Maiden Tower, and learn about the area’s history at the Museum of South Bohemia. End your day with a show at the Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra or the Theater of South Bohemia.

The city is a short train ride from Prague or neighboring Austria’s cities on the European Interrail system, making it an easily accessible city to visit in Europe.

Dordogne Valley, France

This charming region of southern France was named by Lonely Planet as one of the most underrated destinations in Europe a few years ago, and there’s no better time than summer 2022 to explore the Dordogne and find out why.

Things slow down here in the Dordogne Valley compared to Paris, so prepare for a relaxing European vacation where you can kick back and soak up the local culture (and plenty of great food).

While summer is technically a busy season in the Dordogne, you won’t experience the same level of tourist numbers here than you would in nearby Nice or Marseille. Summer also means the city will be alive with festivals and things to do, making this getaway an annual thing.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, made our list of the best cities to visit without travel restrictions earlier this year. So get ready for summer 2022, when this travel destination is ready to welcome international visitors and explain why it’s worth a visit.

The summer months are the perfect time to explore Ljubljana as it is a very walkable city, with river views and outdoor cafés to relax and enjoy the vibe for several days. It’s also a great base for venturing into some of Slovenia’s most impressive landscapes such as Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, and Vintgar Gorge.

Gdansk, Poland

Fly to the capital, Warsaw, hop on the train, and travel north to the stunning city of Gdansk. This underrated European destination by the Baltic Sea is hailed as one of Poland’s most beautiful towns, and visitors here in the summer months will be blessed with things to do and knowing when the warm weather makes for a relaxing all-day exploration.

Among the best things to do in Gdask, you can visit the beach, wander the long market square, explore the scenic 15th century royal road, and even hop on a river cruise on a longboat across the Motlawa River.

A week-long summer trip to Gdansk is a good amount of time to experience the city at a relaxed pace so you can enjoy this much-needed getaway you’ve been waiting for for over two years.
