Trinity Health Michigan and UM Health are entering into a unique collaboration to provide advanced pediatric specialty care at Trinity Health Oakland Hospital (formerly St. Joseph Mercy Oakland) and the communities it serves.
The UM Board of Regents approved the collaborative agreement at its October meeting, paving the way for the two hospitals to expand the availability of pediatric specialty care from CS Mott Children’s Hospital to Metro Detroit families. Trinity Health Michigan’s board of directors also approved the venture, which is expected to be formalized in November.
“Our two strong health systems have a long history of working together, and we are pleased that this new collaboration will allow us to improve access to advanced pediatric care for families in Metro Detroit,” said Luann Thomas Ewald, FACHE, MHA, Chief Operating Officer at CS Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.
“Our pediatric specialists are pleased to join the excellent pediatric providers at Trinity Health Oakland to offer more care options closer to where patients live.”
For the first time, leading pediatric specialists from Michigan’s top-ranked children’s hospital will have a multidisciplinary presence east of I-275, providing services both in outpatient clinics and through inpatient consultations and procedures at Trinity Health Oakland.
“We are thrilled to welcome leading pediatric experts to our community,” said Fabian Fregoli, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Trinity Health Oakland. “This is a game changer for parents and families in Oakland County and makes our hospital a destination for advanced pediatric specialty care.”
The agreement builds on the two health systems’ existing affiliation agreement and follows a joint venture at Chelsea Hospital in 2018, a professional services agreement that provides UM Health’s inpatient service on the 4th floor of Trinity Health Ann Arbor, and joint operation of UM Health agreements to expand cancer and cardiovascular services in the western part of the state.
“Working with UM Health, we are increasing access to advanced pediatric care and delivering better outcomes for children living in Oakland County,” said Shannon Streibich, president of Trinity Health Oakland and senior vice president of operations at Trinity Health Michigan. “I am very grateful to UM Health for partnering with us again and for working alongside our medical teams to provide world-class care to the communities we serve.”
Mott Cardiologists will offer pediatric cardiac care at Trinity Health Oakland starting in January 2022 as part of a professional services agreement between the two hospitals.
Through the new collaboration, the Mott Pediatric Urology and Orthopedics Clinics will open in November 2022 and the Pediatric Surgery Clinic in January 2023. Additional pediatric specialties will also be added to the offerings in the coming year.
UM Health serves patients from across the state through a network of relationships with health systems, hospitals and physicians. A strategic priority in expanding this statewide network is a greater presence in communities across the state, including communities near Ann Arbor and beyond.
“Trinity Health Michigan has been an excellent partner for UM Health as we continue to look for new ways to deliver high-quality care to patients across the state,” said David Miller, MD, president of UM Health.
“These strategic relationships address the growing need for inpatient beds at UM’s Ann Arbor hospitals and expanded care choices closer to patients’ homes.”
